Repeated Ankle Popping during normal walking

Question
Dear Dr. Katz, recently my Right ankle began to pop repeatedly while taking normal walking steps.  While the pain isnt all that bad...the repeated popping is annoyning and I am sure this is some sign that it needs some medical attention.  It happened about 2 months ago just for a morning then it was gone...now it has been back for a week w/no sign of going away.  What could it be ??? I have not injured it in anyway.  Never broken...but played hockey from the ages of 5-21 yrs.  Only ailments are adult onset psoriasis to date.  I would say that my current lifestyle is somewhat sedentary.  Any help is appreciated.  Thank You

Answer
Hi Dan,

Popping in the ankle can be from increased fluid in the joint.  Also, this can occur if the tendons are moving in and out of place.  Lastly you could have some arthritis in the joint that may cause this sensation.

Since it has been 2 months and is associated with pain, I would see a Podiatrist and have some x-rays and likely an MRI to see what is causing the problem.

In the meantime I would avoid strenuous activity.
