pinky toenail split causing much pain

Question
Hi!  My pinky toenail on one foot has always grown in split.  It never really caused me problems, but about 4 weeks ago I caught it on my bed sheets and ripped it all the way down (split vertically to the nail bed). I tried to just cut it short and let it grow back but now it catches easily on the sheets and causes a lot of pain.  It has bled off and on when I catch it.  I don't know what to do because it's causing a lot of pain with shoes (fortunately, it's sandal and flip flop season!).  What can I do?  Or should I make an appointment to see a podiatrist?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
I would see a podiatrist.  In some cases when the toenail splits you can have the nail removed and see if it grows more normally.  If not you can consider permanent nail removal.
