Question
My daughter is 25 months old.  Her feet turn in when she walks and her pediatrician said she has in toeing and flat feet.  We went to a Orthotist today and he recommended she wear special hi-top white shoes and a cable brace during the day.  I did a little research on the internet and the info I read said that braces and special shoes were not necessary and rarely helpful.  My daughter's aunt (father's sister) wore a bar at night when she was young to treat the same condition.  Her daughter who is now 13 months also has the same condition.  Their doctor recommended evaluating her at 18 months to see what type of treatment she will need.  This feet condition seems to run in our family.

What is your opinion on the best treatment for a child whose feet turn in when she walks?

What is the best age for treatment?

Thank you for your advice

Answer
Hi Kim,

This is difficult to answer without an exam.  However, I would see a podiatrist that specializes in pediatric problems or a pediatric orthopedic surgeon.  There needs to be a through evaluation of hip and knee motion as well.  I'm concerned that you need to have a more specialized doctor to evaluate your daughter's condition.  So please see a more specialized doctor.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
