Question
Hi,
I'm a 45 y.o. woman with a desk job where I sit all day.  My only real physical activity is showing dogs (short intervals of fast walking/jogging) and am blessed with no other health issues except allergies.  I've never broken any bones and my last sprained ankle was over 20 years ago.  Both ankles have always cracked/popped with no pain, but 6 days ago, after sitting for several hours, I got up and after about 10 steps, my ankle popped and I had a severe stabbing pain in the front, middle of my ankle and pressure behind the inside and outside ankle bones.  The pain only lasted for a minute or two, then my ankle felt weak/sore.  I was walking normal, pain free after five minutes.  I've continued to have this pop and pain in my one ankle several times a day and it does not seem to be getting any better or worse, even with elevation and rest.  I can't make it happen, but it's happened when I was sitting as well.  It seems to happen when my toes are flexed up towards my shin.

Any idea what it could possibly be?    Does a podiatrist or orthopedist treat this type of ankle problem?

Answer
This Chicago/Elmhurst Podiatrist says.....

Sounds like tendinitis.Your foot & ankle pain will not be helped with elevation-but may be improved with complete rest for a few days. May be due to increased physical activity or weight, low or high arches. or beginning  arthritis of the ankle joint. May improve with max dose of anti-inflammatories, like Advil or Alleve. Try for about a week and try wrapping it and also wear an ankle brace and try icing. You can check our online website store for examples of ankle braces at AnkleNFoot.com.
Treatment may be as simple as orthotics/orthoses (not over the counter, and made by a podiatrist Board Certified in Orthopedics), an ankle brace and physical therapy.
Usually a Board Certified Podiatrist is the doctor of choice. To be Board Certified in Podiatry you need to turn in 75 cases. I turned in over 150 cases-since I am Board Certified in both Foot & Ankle Orthopedics and Surgery.
For an orthopedist-it may be 12 or less cases-unless they did a Foot & Ankle Fellowship!

Hope this helps!
