Question
Dear Dr. Katz,
In September I underwent a EPF. Since the surgery I have been experiencing severe pain that is far worse than the pain I had prior to the procedure. I have tried several treatments;ice, heat, nightsplints, orthodics, walking boot, cortisone injections meloxicam, and tylenol, to no avail. The pain is on the bottom of my heel and arch. It also is located in my outside ankle and travels down the outside of my foot. It is worse with weight bearing. I am unable to exercise, and somedays unable to walk without a limp. It has reached the point where my gait is now effecting my hips and back. Is there anything else I can do to help manage the pain? Am I stuck with this pain for the rest of My life? What questions should I be asking my Foot and Ankle Surgeon? Thank you so much for your time. Jo

Answer
Hi Jo,

I would recommend that your surgeon gets an x-ray and probably an MRI to evaluate bone and soft tissue injury.  I would certainly be evaluated for physical therapy.

In some cases you can develop instability of the outside ankle and foot as a result of any plantar fascia release.

Consider seeing another podiatrist for a second opinion if your not making progress.
