Question
I am in Calgary Canada and have been diagnosed with Mortens neuroma, Last year I recieved steroid and alchohol shots, there was some relief but the burning and numbing came back. For normal every day living it is not a problem yet,but I am very active and I rock climb and mountaineer. The burning gets so bad that I have to take my climbing boots and shoes of. The podiatrist has suggested surgery so we ordered MRI and bone scans. The scans both came back with no sign of the neuroma. The podiatrist said that it possible for the MRI and the bone scan to miss the neuroma? The radiologist said the MRI pictures are 3mm apart and info from one leads into the other and it is not possible to miss the neuroma.I have to oposing opinions, would a diagnostic ultrasound confirm the neuroma?Could you please confirm the process and cost of the Cyro surgery as I could send you my MRI,bone scan and podiatrist's reports.
Thanks
Jeff

Answer
Hi Jeff,

I have seen neuromas missed on MRI due to poor patient positioning, it is certainly possible regardless of the 3mm cuts.  Bone scans do not show a neuroma at all.  Ultrasounds show them well.
