Question
Pins and screws were removed in May of 08.  Still unable to bear weight without alot of swelling and pain.  Most pain is at night and first thing in the AM before I evan walk on it.  Surgeon won't consider further surgery (fusion) before January of next year.  I am in the process of selling my two story condo in a horrible realeaste market as I can no longer deal eith the stairs.  I am close to loosing a perfectly good career as a manager.  I need to be on my feet and in production areas to effectively manage anything.
Through moderate research, I am aware that fusion may not resolve the pain issues.  Is there a more effective treatment than fusion.  I am a single parent with many years of work ahead of me at my place of employement and my home life.   I am near ready to throw in the towel and a long way away from a surgery in January that may and may  not help.
Please tell me there is help out there....This can't be the rest of my life!

Answer
Hi Debbie,

A Lisfranc's injury takes a fair amount of time to heal.  Hopefully you have started some physical therapy.  That is essential to healing.  I would also consider a custom AFO (ankle foot orthosis) for support and stability.  I would give it more time before considering a fusion.  Seek other opinions and see a podiatrist for the afo.  There are ways to get relief from the pain.  I treat many people following foot and ankle injuries with a procedure known as cryosurgery or CryoMax.  You may a good candidate for the procedure to give you relief while healing further.
