Healing after permanent toenail removal

Question
Hi Dr. Katz. 5 days ago I had a toenail permanently removed by my general doctor. It had been repeatedly injured over the last 8 years, and he said the matrix was damaged.  I抳e been soaking twice a day in warm water and Epsom salt, and keeping a band-aid on it most of the time. I should also mention that I was on my feet way more than I should have been during the first two days.
I抦 wondering if I should be concerned with the swollen red area on the top of my toe, or if that抯 a normal part of healing?

Thank you for any advice you can offer.
Chrissy

Answer
Hi Chrissy,

I am unable to login to photobucket.  However, there is typically redness behind the nail after a matrixectomy.  It also depends on the chemical used.  The toe will usually drain a clear fluid as well.
If the area worsens I would see your dr to check for an infection.

Sincerely,
