Question
Dear Dr.
I recently  had an MRI of the cervical spine which showed c5c6 protrusion, that is producing mild flattening of the cervical spinal cord without abnormal signal. The previous MRI did not show this(1 year ago).I had a car accident 2 years ago, and have had neck pain and right arm pain that has been keeping me up at night. I take my pain med at night, because I work during the day.I also have several broad based disc herniations at several other levels c3c4,c4c5.Is surgery considered at this point? I'm not sure if I should wait or have the surgery.Im in my 40s.
Thank you,any advice would help.

Answer
Dear Susan,  First off I'm not a doctor, I am someone who has been injured at the C4-C5 level since 1973. I am a quadriplegic and have lived a pretty full life. So my answers are based on real life experiences. Anyway back to you, I'm sorry you are living with all the ailments you have to deal with. As far as surgery goes, if the procedure is considered risky you need to weigh your options. If I were you I would do it now. I think your risking further damage. But that is just my opinion. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Ken
