Question
I am in the military and on Dec 14th I had an Open Bankart Reconstruction with Capsular Shift (Left Shoulder). It's at the end of the 3rd week after surgery and I have a few questions. I know its barely at the 4 week mark but I do not know where I should be at as far as what should I be able to do with my arm. If I am standing, I can raise my arm straight out in front of me to about 100 degrees. If I am standing, I can raise my arm out to the side at about a 90 degree angle. I am unable to touch the top of my head with my left arm yet. I am exercising my arm per doc's orders and using a 2lb and 5lb weight. When I use the 2lb weight, I can lift my arm still to about 100 degrees (out in front of me), but when I use the 5lb weight, I can barely make it to the 45 degree mark. I guess my question is, where should I be at this point after surgery? Is there a timeline that is posted somewhere online that I can see? I'm just discouraged with my progress because I do not know where I should be at. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Answer
Dear Matthew

I wish I could help you, but if you read my bio, you will see I have no knowledge of shoulder injuries.

I will tell you though that everyone recovers at different speeds from surgery depending on age, the type of surgery and the injury.  If you are not happy with your progress, it might be a good idea to get a second opinion.

I wish I could be of more help.
