Healing after THR
9/21 14:22:06

Question
Sharon, its been almost 5 months since the THR.  For the most part I'm pain free.  There are times when I experience "discomfort".  I know my activity level has increased (biking, walking and general exercises) and it appears the discomfort occurs after the activity.  Sometimes is goes away in a few hours; sometimes its takes days.  Is this normal healing?

thanks,
Ron

Answer
Hi Ron

Congratulations on your THR.

My rule of thumb is that it takes about six months to heal completely, maybe longer depending on your age, activity level and healing power. When the THR goes in, large muscle groups are affected and that takes time to heal.

What you are experiencing,in my opinion, is normal. You might want to cut back on activity and then re-introduce them more slowly to see if that has an effect.  It sounds to me as you are just experiencing muscle aches and that's going to get better as you heal more completely.  Just go slowly.  Remember, the THR is not your own bones, and you can't be too hard on yourself.

If you continue to have problems, I'd suggest seeing your doctor.

Best of luck to you.
Sharon
