Question
Dr. Tsatsos,

Thank you for your time.  I broke my 5th metatarsal about 6 months ago.  I wore a non walking cast for 6 weeks and a walking boot for another 6weeks.  I haven't had any major problems with it until today.  After walking my dog I sat and watched tv for about an hour.  After I got up it began to hurt everytime I stepped on that foot (not a major pain but enough to bother).  Is this normal after all this time?  Should I get it x-rayed?

Answer
Dear Tanya,
For your 5th metatarsal fracture....
The fifth metatarsal can take longer to heal than the other metatarsals due to the fact that fractures usually occur in the base-which is cortical bone & may take longer to heal.It should continue to feel better up to another month or two. Mention the discomfort on your follow up visit. If the pain progresses-then call your doctor.

Hope This Helps!
and
Good Luck!
