Question
I have a stress fracture in the third metatarsel, as confirmed by an MRI. My doctor recommended walking with a cane for six weeks, orthodics and soaking in epsom salts three times per day. I asked about wearing an ace bandage and he advised against it. Does this sound like appropriate treatment?

Answer
Dear Jonathan,

This Orthopedic Chicago Podiatrist located in West Loop 60661,Roscoe Village 60618, Elmhurst 60126 & Bartlett 60103 says...
For your metatarsal stress fracture. Sounds like you didn't see a podiatrist.
If the metatarsal hurts when you walk-then you need more immobilization-perhaps a surgical shoe. Ace bandage is appropriate. There is no therapeutic value for epsom salt soaks for a stress fracture of the metatarsal. If it continues to hurt-see your local podiatrist-the real foot & ankle specialist.

Hope this helps.
Good Luck!
