Question
Hi Dr. Katz,
I had fusion surgery on my second metatarsal joint following an injury (I fell off of a ladder onto that foot) and arthritis.  A pin was put in to fuse the joint together.  I was told that there was no cartilage in the joint.  I am now recovering with a cam boot and was told that I could put weight on the heal of the boot, but can't imagine when this will be comfortable.  I am using a knee scooter to get around my house.  I was also told I do not need to unwrap the gauze to look at the surgical site unless there is bleeding or puss or I have a temp.  I do not have a temp and see nothing on the gauze so I haven't looked at the site (this is day 5 post surgery).  I will see the doctor in 9 days.
1.  When should I expect to be able to bear weight on the heal of the boot?

2. How long do people usually need to wear the boot post surgery.

3.  At what point should I be able to resume all activity-2 mile walks, tennis?  I was told that I should be able to resume all activity when this heals????

4.  I also have a question about how to get the knee scooter and myself in and out of the car.  I am allowed to drive after one week as this is my left foot and I am no longer on pain meds and need to get back to work.

5.  Finally, should I unwrap the gauze to look at the surgical site?
Thank you so much for your feedback.  Bonnie

Answer
Hi Bonnie,

First, I am surprised that your surgeon did not answer these questions for you.  We all have different treatment and post-operative protocols.  I wouldn't want to tell you one thing and compromise your surgeons advice.

If your surgeon said not to open the bandage I would do just that.  If you expose the area you may have a higher risk of infection.

Please do yourself a favor.  Call your surgeon and get the answers to all of the questions you have asked me.

Good Luck.

Sincerely,

Marc Katz, DPM
