Question
Hello and Happy New Year,

I've had toe nail fungus for about 3 years now. First it was a small part of my right big toe nail, now it's on both big toe nails. I saw a podiatrist about 2 years ago and gave me a prescription for lamisil, but he mentioned that it had some major side effects. So I decided not to take it. I've tried every kind of cream, oil, even bleach but nothing works. So my question is, is it okay to leave my nails the way they are, I don't have any pain and it's only the big toe nails, but it is embarrassing and wouldn't mind wearing sandals once in awhile. Would there be any major problems for me later down the road, or should I take the medication? Also, could you recommend another alternative treatment if any?
Thank you.

Answer
Hi Mike,

If the nail appearance bothers you, that is considered a reason to treat the toenails.  They may worsen with no treatment, however not treating them will not cause major harm.

Lamisil tablets are considered safe if you check your liver enzymes and monitor them during treatment.  Rarely is there a major problem.  However, it would be your decision whether to take them or not.  This would be based on the risks vs. the benfit to you.

I have found that if you have the nails ground down every month and you use Tineacide cream, the toenails often improve.

The sooner you treat them the better.

Good Luck.
