Question
I have a completely dark purplish toe nail (right next to big toe). To my knowledge I have not injured it. It's has no or little pain associated with it. It's been several weeks since I first noticed it with no change. I have started running five or six miles every other day for the last couple months. Any Idea what it is?

This is a common problem in runners.  While running there is pressure on the nail and there is bleeding beneath the nail which then dries and produces a dark color.

This may become painful but is usually harmless.  At times the nail may have to be removed if the condition worsens.

In the meantime you should check your shoes and make sure you have the proper length.  Your toes may be hitting the tip of the shoe.  See these articles:
