Ingrown Tonail

Question
I had a procedure several years ago, where part of the nail is removed and a chemical is used to kill the root.  Can it grow back?  I've started experiencing some sharp, tingling feelings underneath the skin where I think the root might be.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Rich,

It is possible to get regrowth of a portion of the toenail following a permanent chemical ingrown nail removal.  Somewhere between 5-10 percent may get a small spicule that returns.  Typically we would just remove that and treat the area.

I would see a Podiatrist and have the area checked.  There are other possible causes of your symptoms.  I would get an x-ray of the toe to check the underlying bone.  You can also develop a cyst in the area.
