lump in sole of foot

Question
i am a 61 year old healthy man - i've recently developed what feels like a soft,
flat lump in the sole of my left foot - the sensitive spot is located in/on the
ball of my foot - it feels almost as if my sock were doubled up - it is
moderately uncomfortable when i walk on hard surfaces without shoes - it is
initially uncomfortable when i walk in soft, running shoes, but the discomfort
seems to disappear during the day - i am mostly unaware of the sensation
during the day - curiously, it appears to be worse upon awakening in the
morning, and in the evening, when i tend to walk without shoes - the
discomfort never rises to the level of 'pain' - there is nothing visible on the
surface, and there is no discomfort when i palpate the spot - it seems to have
developed gradually over the past 2 - 4 weeks - thanks in advance for your
help

Answer
Hi Essad,

I would see a podiatrist for an exam.  There are several possible causes.  You may have some type of cyst on the tendon or joint or you could have a condition known as a plantar fibroma.  These are both benign types of lesions.  It would be difficult to make a diagnosis without seeing the problem.
