protruding bone in outside middle of foot

Question
I have a protruding bone on the outside of my right foot about half way down the foot closer to the ankle than it is to the top of the foot. You can definitely see the bump looking straight at the foot. It hurts on and off but I can still walk around and wear normal shoes without a problem. If I put on tennis shoes and tie them tight....it is quite painful. It also hurts more after walking on the treadmill. I can't remember any injury to the foot in the past. This became noticeable about 3 weeks ago. It does not really hurt if I touch it and press on it. It just appears that there is something out of place maybe. thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Susan,

From the descripton, I'm having a hard time visualizing the area.  It may be the base of the fifth metatarsal bone which is to the side of the foot.  This bone has some major tendon attachments and can become inflammed with bone and soft tissue enlargement.  You could also have a condition such as a ganglion cyst. If the problem continues I would see a podiatrist.  Try ice to the side of the foot and careful with the irritating shoes.
