Question
Dear Sir-  Any help/insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
During the past two years, I seem to get random "attacks" of pain in my
ankle/upper foot (right side).  It seems like out of nowhere, I will feel
discomfort which turns into severe pain.  It becomes so painful that I usually
cannot sleep and it literally hurts to-the-touch around the ankle area?!?!?  It
will often last a day or two and then completely disappear like nothing was
ever wrong.  I keep trying to "live with it" but I am so tired of the burning pain
when it comes on.  Do you know what might cause such a weird occurance?
My wife is a PT but she is even "stumped" as to what it is.....she thinks it could
be a bone chip rather than a tendon or muscle issue....as she has tried to
evaluate the area when it is under severe pain.
Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Mr. Justin Engle

Answer
Hi Justin,

It could be gout and that should be checked by a podiatrist.  The attacks come on quickly and then usually resolve in a few days.  You could have a bone chip or tendon problem and that would be best evaluated with an mri.
