Removal and Replacement of Harrington Rods

Question
Dear Dr. Ryan,

I am having my 42 (I am also 42) year old Harrington Rods removed and replace soon. I am having balance and stiff right leg due to the older material. They are going to go through my back to remove the old, and the second day will be through the chest to replace the rods.

Can you give me an estimate time that a person is out of work? I realize complications might flare up, so I am just trying to get an idea.

The main goal of this operation is to stop the symptoms and with LOADS of work, get back some of my function. I can still stand, walk just have a drop foot.

I appreciate all your help.

Sincerely,

Bill

Answer
Because I am not a surgeon nor do I know your specific medical history, I can't say for certain how long your recovery might take.  I would guess that 8 weeks would not be unusual for recovering from the surgery although the rehabilitation will go on for months.

Your surgeon can give you the most accurate time out of work figure.  He/she has all the necessary information.

Thank you for your question, Bill. I hope that my answer was helpful.
