Question
I had a fusion with 4 screws a month ago and one of the screws broke off within a 24 hour time period but I had to wait for another 18 hours until they went in to fix it. There are so many questions I have about that because now I have severe nerve pain in my left ankle and foot and that it the same side where the screw broke off. I want to know if that is a common thing to happen and if not what do I do?  My back feels great now but not my foot and ankle and it affects the way I walk.  I'm 28 yrs old.

Answer
I would recommend a visit to your surgeon and tell him/her about the pain.  Your doctor has all the medical records and films to give you the best possible answers for your specific case.

It sounds like a nerve may have gotten pinched when the screw broke off if the fusion moved.  The doctor may want to check the fusion with a new MRI or scan.

Thank you for your question, Karla.  I hope that my answer was helpful.
