Question
My friend recently had a SCI (C4).  They are performing a tracheotomy tomorrow.  Why is this being done?  Is it reversible? Will he be able to talk?  I have so many questions. I am so worried about him. Thank you for your help.

Answer
Hi Wanda,
Thanks so much for your question.

This procedure is done to assist the patient in his breathing. The body is in shock and the diaphram muscles, which he will use to breath, are weak right now. He will eventually be weaned off the ventilator. Right now though, he won't be able to talk. There will be a small scar but he should able to talk just fine once he is breathing on his own.

If you have anymore questions, please feel free to ask me again anytime.

Thanks again,
John McKinzie
