Question
For 10 years now, my mothers had an intense burning sensation in her right foot. Its worse when shes sitting or lying in bed. Sometimes it feels like theres water trickling down her calf to her foot. Ice helps due to its numbing effect. Heat makes it a lot worse. Sitting for long periods is not possible. X-rays dont pick up anything. Is an MRI of her back a good idea, in the case that maybe its a pinched nerve? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Ps My mother is 70 and walks regularly,of a healthy body weight

Hi, Robin.

Undiagnosed?  That sounds like common sciatica -- which is a pinched nerve condition.

Please see my article on sciatica:

Have a physical therapist do the diagnostic tests for sciatica; alternately (and more expensively) a neurologist.  A nerve-conduction test may be helpful.

The article, above, gives much useful information.
