Question
Hi,

My husband has had 8 lower back surgeries and a failed
pseudo-fusion in the past 10 years.  He has put on some belly
weight and wants to lose it but fears aggrevating his lower back.
He has a pinched nerve that affects his right leg if too vigorous
in his activity.   I want to help him learn to stretch properly and
engage in safe exercise but am unsure of the best options for
him.  Do you have any advice?

Thank you!
Shari

Answer
Yes!

First, Shari, reconsider stretching.

A better approach than stretching is available:  retraining the muscular tension that makes stretching necessary, so that stretching is unnecessary.

The pinched nerve condition affecting his right leg sounds like sciatica.  Learn more about it at somatics.com/conditions.htm.

Please see the articles on stretching and back pain at somatics.com/page4.htm.

There are practitioners of this approach and self-treatment (safe exercise) programs.  (See the preview by sending blank email to [email protected].)

Lawrence Gold
