Lower back/left hip pain

Question
It all started rather subtly; I was staying in a hotel room over the long x-mas weekend visiting my boyfriend's family. I could feel little pain during the night, and less pain during the day if I moved certain ways.

The day after our return I visited my chiro, and believe I mentioned the lower back pain to him. He did checked my spin as normal, and I know he did a couple of adjustments that surprised me from their impact and the tension felt there.

The next morning I could not get our of bed; had to roll out. Since then, I had gotten better and worse. Last night was excruciating, and couldn't move until I found 2 old Neurontin.

I guess my question is...should I wait for my chiro appointment in two days or go to the emergency if it gets worse. The biggest problem is that I have no insurance and only a part time job. I'm very scared. I'm a pretty active 38 year old (walk long idstances, ballet and samba, hike/backpack when I can). No heavy backpacking a couple of years.

Sorry for the long narrative, it's my personality.

LisaMarie, Ph.D.

Answer
Hi LisaMarie,

I appreciate, "Long Narratives", the more information I am given, the more accurate I can help. I wish I knew more about the DC you are presently seeing such as DC school and preferred technique. I maybe reaching here but I hope you didn't put a heating pad on this since this would increase the inflammation. Ice it down as much as possible and get some flexion/distraction therapy until things calm down. The reason why an x-ray isn't indicated yet is the lack of trauma in your history and the onset speed. If symptoms persist and you are unable to find a comfortable position, an MRI or X-ray is required and prudent, not to mention legally necessary. If you like, I would be happy to discuss this with your DC, my number is 708-466-9994 if you want further information. Have a good new year and don't forget the ice!

Good Luck!

Dr. Timothy Durnin

P.S. TIP Wrap the ice in a warm moist towel, its much more comfortable when it contacts the skin.
