Question
QUESTION: I slipped and fell and sustained a wedge fracture  in T9 or T6.  That was almost 6 weeks ago.  I have been on my back for most of this time but am still having pain in that area and in my chest.  It still hurts to take a deep breath.  My Dr. said between 4&6 weeks to heal and that when the pain is gone it is healed.  Can another xray show if it is healed? How much longer should it take?  When can I resume activities?  Thank you.

ANSWER: Hi Susan,

I don't know your age so it is impossible for me to accurately give you an estimate. An x-ray would be unnecessary at this point. Staying active and not laying around will have multiple benefits and promote healing, reduce atrophy and stimulate new bone growth density. I advise you take Fosamax or Boniva with microcrystalline hydroxyapatite with vitamin D to prevent this from happening again. It is available OTC and is superior to calcium.

Good Luck!

QUESTION: I am 48..Dr. said only 2.5 hrs of standing or sitting per 24hrs...can I  agrivate injury with activity i.e lifting or carrying?

Answer
Not likely since it has been 6 weeks, I would keep lifting to a minimum, 20lbs or less. Those restrictions are unrealistic for the age of the Fx. At this point, normal activities of normal living need to be re-introduced or atrophy and further bone loss will set in. If you had a complete hysterectomy, that would explain the fragility of the thoracic vertebrae. If you are at or approaching menopause, take the above recommended medications under your physicians supervision to prevent this from repeating.

Good Luck!

Dr T.
