Question
I have had a back fusion for l4 disc about 3 years ago and dont know whether my problems now could be linked but I have had a pain in the right side of my head up from my ear which is also affecting both shoulders.  Its worse in the mornings but the dull ache seems to remain. Also  at the same time in the mornings and after sitting at night my legs are also very painful and have difficulty in walking the first few steps. This also goes to the bottom of my buttocks.  Thanks for your help

Answer
Hi Eunice,

I suspect your leg involvement is directly related to scar tissue proliferation secondary to the L4 fusion. This can be abated somewhat with therapeutic ultrasound treatments as long as you have no metal under the incision.

You can see a physician and get an MRI of your neck and low back to know for sure.
As far as your neck, it sounds like a simple subluxation that is easily corrected by a Chiropractor or Osteopath. Without knowing any specifics relating to your cardiovascular health, it would be reckless to dismiss head and neck pain to a biomechanical problem. I would be more comfortable knowing these issues where ruled out.

Many vascular problems can manifest themselves as disc or spinal problems. I think a thorough workup with a cardiologist is in order, then a follow up with a D.C. if more serious issues are addressed.

With the limited information I have on you, I think it best you see a doctor and get a good physical.

From your history, is it possible you don't like to go to doctors and that's why you waited so long with your back?

Normally surgery is never indicated for back problems unless you wait until the last minute and ignore all the signs and symptoms and it's too late. Am I right?

I don't blame you, I would be afraid of doctors too, that's one of the main reasons I became one, I don't trust them. I am glad you have sought out some pre-visit counsel, it makes you smart. I think in this case, you should have it looked at in person by a professional.
It is always better to be safe than sorry, with your symptoms, I would see a neurologist, cardiologist and a D.C. if everything is systemically O.K.

It may turn out to be just a scar tissue issue in your back and a pinched nerve in your neck, but I would hate to bet my life on it. Go see the above, report back to me and I can advise you on any and all diagnoses.

Thanks for asking!
