Question
My 14 year old son has broken his big toe and the x-ray shows that there is a break through the growth plate. The Doctor on duty said that no treatment was required so there is no cast or bandage on the toe. Will this be a problem in future as he is a keen sportsman. Should I take him to a specialist

Answer
Dear Lynden
If it were my son, I would ask to be referred to a specialist.  Even though my expertise does not run with toes, I did have a problem similar with my own son.  His thumb was broken and we took him to a pediatric orthopedist, who was concerned that if the injury were in the growth plate it might cause problems in the future.  Luckily the break was not in the growth plate for my son.

I am not saying this will be be a problem for your son, but a growth plate injury should always be looked at by a specialist.
