Feeling anxious

Question
Dear Sharon: I am so happy to find someone like you who can answer my doubts not just because you have the info but because you had had the experience of THR. First of all let me tell you I am almost 40 years old (tired of the question: why sooo young????) I had my first hip surgery when I was 14 I had a bone tumor (benign) and had a bone graft, then 25 excellent years went by, lots of exercise (maybe too much) and then a 8 years ago doctors told me someday I will need THR and here I am. I was fixed on july 20 so I have 1 month 10 days, my surgery went very good (I live in Cancun but was operated in Mexico City with an expert on hips) I was 4 days at the hospital and 10 sessions of rehab.I came home and still having 3 sessions a week of rehab, 10 or 15 min of treadmill, lots of exercises and whenever I can I go to the pool also.I have about 10 days walking on a cane but I feel anxious because I feel now like if I am no progressing, everybody tells me how good I am (including drs. and rehab therapists) but I have read of people in this point walking on their own. Is this a rule or is it normal I am still on my cane? I no longer take pain killers on a regular basis, just now and then when I feel pain. Is it normal to have pain and a lot of work elevating your leg when you磖e lying down? Is it normal to feel stiffness when you have been a lot sitting or hours after rehab exercise (treadmill)? Is it normal to feel anxious or afraid of bearing all the weight in your new hip? I just feel now that I will be on the cane FOREVER!! please tell me about this. And also if there is more info on pool exercises. Thank you very much Sharon.
Maribel.

Answer
Hi Maribel

You are only two months out and still being on a cane is not unusual at that time.  I think you are expecting too much of yourself.  Even though THR surgery is "elective", it is still major surgery and it can take up to three to six months to return to normal.

Full healing can take up to six months to one year.  It sounds to me as if you are doing wonderfully and I urge you to keep up the good work, lessen the pressure on yourself and you'll be fine.

Pool walking is a wonderful exercise.  I would not suggest any type of water aerobics because even though you are still in the water, you are pounding the surface of the bottom of the pool.  Walking in a pool will increase muscle strength and tone you as welll.

Hope this answered your question.
