Question
Hi Dr:

Thank you so much in advance for reading my card, I was diagnosed with hip dysplasia in the right hip when I was 16 month old, I had 5 surgeries as a child to correct the problem, my last surgery was at 9 years old, I am now 31 years old, and I had a life as normal as possible, I never have a single pain, however since a week ago, I start having pain in my hip basically every time I go outside and walk like 4 or 5 blocks I start having pain in my right hip( the one where I had the 5 surgeries), then I go to bed and in the morning I wake up feeling much better, the intensity of the pain is not very high, but it is bothersome enough, I am aware that people with my medical history will have arthritis at some point, my question is can arthritis progress so much in so little time? Could this be a result of the low temperatures we have been experiencing this winter? I am seeing an orthopedic surgeon the next week and I am totally terrified, do orthopedic surgeons still use the spica for adults with hip dysplasia?

Best Regards,
Ana

Answer
Dear Ana,

This Orthopedic Chicago Podiatrist located in West Loop 60661,Roscoe Village 60618, Elmhurst 60126 & Bartlett 60103 says...
For your hip dysplasia.
You will not be asked to wear a spica. If there is arthritis-you will have to watch your weight, and do gentle exercises, like Tai Chi, swimming and possibly Yoga. There may be additional treatment consisting of therapy.
Areas of injury-including surgical may develop early arthritis-however let your orthopedist determine that for you.

Hope this helps.
Good Luck!
