Question
I have degenerative disc disease and was told I need fusion at L5S1. It's been almost two years and the ortho I seen said that in time the pain would go away. It hasn't. It's gotten worse with severe spasms all through my back and legs. Are the spasms a part of DDD? And do you know what the success rate is for fusion at L5S1? Also do you know the odds on it working? My family is having raving fits that I've decided to go for surgery. I don't know what else to do. I've tried everything else. Thanks, Rhonda

Answer
Hello,RHONDA>
My name is: TOM.
I KNOW exacly What you are talking about here! I Have the same thing! But I have mine at all ( 5 ) Lower lumbar's..
I am also having a three level fusion on the 17th of july, AND; I am going to get a Titanium rod screwed in there for support. Feel better? I also have D.D.D.  And " SPURRING" throughout my entire back. Now, I know you feel better, :)
I hope you do! I think this type of damage to your spine, And where the injury is! It is in a place where it is alot more Suppseptible to more pain and sensitivity. Because look at the place the injury is!! This is where all your weight rest'. It is a very sensitive place. The ( SPASMS ) are apart of the ( DDD ) But they are mostly from a nerve root compression somewhere in your back. You need to stretch. you might need to excersise more, Even if it hurt's. I have to do it, But it makes me feel alot better after.YOu can find out the success rate's, And all the Information on our surgery at a cool website, It is our sister site called: WWW.ABOUT.COM Just enter a keyword in the search box like : spinal fusion/back surgery and it will take you to a place you can pick from many topic's.. It is great! I hope I've helped a little RHONDA... I thank you for writing me, It's been a pleasure. Check out the website! you will learn all about our Disease. You WILL be great, And don't forget to keep a really big smile on your face, It keep's the doctor's wondering " what the heck are you smiling so big for?" And you only know why! And you don't have to tell anybody.. PLUS It drives the doctors nutso!.. Keep the chin up.. thanks for the great question..
