Hip replacement in young adult

Question
One year ago my 20 year old daughter broke her hip in a riding accident. The screws in her hip are causing great pain and are being removed, the next option is a hip replacement.  I had heard that hip replacements with people of child bearing age are not recommended and it could impact my daughters desire to someday have children due to the materials used in the replacement. Is this true ? If so, what other options do we have ?

Answer
Hi Jackie

I had my replacements put in when I was 16.  I attended school, went to college and grad school, got married, toured Europe and had two healthy children with my replacements.

I don't see any reason why the THR would impact your daughter and her eventual pregnancies.  The only possible problem might be that she would need a C-section due to decreased muscle tone in the hips.  My first son was born naturally, my second was born with a C-section.  I had no problems.  The only thing I had to do was be careful of my weight gain.  The weight gain and the carrying of the baby might cause your daughters center of gravity to shift a bit, but I don't see any reason why she could not have children one day.

Just be sure that her OB/GYN and her orthopod work together for her best interests.
