Question
QUESTION: Hi Sharon,
I really need your help. For the past week my son has been in the hospital on a morphine drip due to acute inflammation in his right hip. He is 17 and had Perthes when he was 10. His femoral head is anything but round and he has constant pain. We live in Maine and no one here seems to have much experience with THR's. Do you have names of surgeon's that would have this experience?

ANSWER: Julie

It's so hard to see your child in pain, and I truly feel badly for you.

I do know of a wonderful doctor in Massachusetts.  I do not, however, know of anyone in Maine.  The name of the doctor you need to find in MA is Dr. Thomas Einhorn.  Please mention my name.  Tell him that I was his teenage patient in Downstate Medical Center with the the kidney transplant.

He is the best in the New England area.

I wish you the best of luck.

QUESTION: Yes I did Sharon. I actually ended up calling him at home by mistake and he was nice enough to talk to me and give me an appointment. I will let you know how it goes.
Thank you again for your help.
I was wondering what surgery he did for you?
Thanks again,
Julie

Answer
He is a wonderful caring person.  Just out of curiosity, did you mention me to him and did he remember me?

He did two of my revisions when I was in my late 20's.  The first one was shortly after I married and the second one was after we had left NYC.  I was visiting and I had fallen in NYC while I was visiting and he was working at Downstate Hospital and I could not travel back to Virginia. He worked with my out of state insurance company to get me OK'd to have him do the surgery.

Later on when I was in Virginia, I had to have a harder revision and the surgeon here needed to find out the prosthesis that was used in the hip when Dr. Einhorn did the early revision.  He had sent someone back to the warehouse where all the old files were stored to go through my paperwork to get me that information.  That was one of the nicest things anyone ever did for me.

At the time revisions were fairly new surgeries and only specific surgeons were licensed to do them, Dr. Einhorn was one of the ones who had that license and he was the best at the time.  Is he with the University of MA hospital?

Sharon
