Question
I have a problem with my right big toe. After walking a moderate distance, say half a mile, the toe will spasm a little causing a momentary cramp. This seems to be a function of how many times and how far the toe bends. There is a medium size bunion also.
My question for you is: are there any type of shoes available that will lessen the amount the big toe bends when walking? I know I will probably have to have surgery eventually, but in the meantime, a shoe solution would be nice. Thanks

Answer
It could be a few different problems...  when your shoe bends at the ball of your foot, a crease forms at the top of the shoe and this might be squashing the big toe, which causes the problem. In that case, you need to look for a higher toe box.
IF the actual bending of the big toe is the problem, then a very stiff sole will stop it from bending. As will a custom made orthotic or a rocker bar added to the sole of the shoe.
