Question
My daughter is a ballet dancer en pointe. Last week she dropped a stair on her big toe and cracked it. Part of the toenail has come off and she has a performance this weekend. It has been about 8 days. It is no longer sore to the touch and does not appear to be infected but is still painful when she goes en full pointe. Can she do anything to help with the pain so that she can dance this weekend?

Answer
Hi Wanda,

I have had dancers with similar problems.  I would have her apply several pieces of tape or Band-Aid around the nail to keep it stable.  In addition, she may find it more comfortable to tape the big toe and second toe together for stability.  Try both ways prior to her performance.  Ice to the area for a few minutes at a time mat ease some of the tenderness.

Good Luck.

Sincerely,
