Question
Dr. Durnin,

I am 12 days post op from a microdiscectomy L4/5. The herniation was larged and sequestered. The recovery is going fairly well. I am an elite level athlete as well as a firefighter, and in studying the type of herniation I had, I have seen studies that state the reherniation rate is as high as 27% for this type of herniation. I am extremely motivated to attack this from as many angles as possible to be in the 63%. Any recommendations and how much hope do think I have if I am hyper-vigilant. This might sound pathetic, but I am contemplating how I am going to live the rest of my life with a high quality of life.

Thank you in advance for your time,

Geoff

Answer
Hi Geoff,

Now is the time to act before it is too late, take 3000mg/day of glucosamine sulfate with MSM, get therapeutic ultrasound over the incision to speed blood supply, healing and reduce scar tissue. After surgery, you will never be the same, but early preventive measures such as this will go a long way to maintain what you had.

Good Luck!
