Question
Hi,
I have been attending a clinic for pain management.  I also have back pain.  one of the things we are doing is some deep breathing things.  We are doing other things but deep breathing is one of them.  I don't see how deep breathing can help the pain.  I am trying to be open and give it a chance.  So I have come on this forum to see if you can offer me any insights on how breathing can or is supposed to help pain.  Also, if you know of any resources on the internet that also offer more information on these breathing exercises and how they are supposed to work that would be great.  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Ray,
Deep breathing is also used in childbirth, it is called Lamaze. That may be a good start in looking up information on the Internet.

Deep breathing, or diaphragm breathing, makes the body release certain endorphins that are the body's natural painkillers.

I hope this helps. If you have any questions or need additional information please don't hesitate to ask.
     Thanks
       Tracy
