Question
Hi, I am a 33 year old female and i have severe pain just next to my right shoulder blade.  It is pretty precise and has been hurting since the last week in February.  It seems to be getting worse and no matter what I take and how much of it, I can't seem to get the pain to go away.   I fell down some stairs about 10 years ago and this particular spot bothered me.  The doctor gave me muscle relaxers and sent me on my way.  Since then, I have had boughts of flare ups, but nothing this painful.  Also, when you rub or massage it, my arm goes numb.  I guess my question is what could be wrong and what I should be doing about it?  Thank you so much.

Answer
Hello Dawnelle,

You may have a thoracic rib subluxation (rib moves out of place)  This can cause severe sharp stabbing pain the back that can radiate to the chest or side.  Injuries (fall) can cause damage to the ligaments, tendons, and muscles around the joint which results in scar tissue.

You may want to see a doctor of chiropractic who specializes in soft tissue injuries.  Specific soft tissue treatment and adjust may greatly benefit your condition.

Have a great day,
Dr. Brendon O'Brien D.C.
