Hip adjustments after back surgery

Question
I had back surgery one month ago which involved a herniated disc at the L4/L5 area and a removal of a bone spur that was pinching on a nerve bundle.  Recovery was going well until I started physical therapy and now it feels like my hips need adjusted.  Is it safe to have my hips adjusted so soon after my back surgery?

Answer
Dear Alisa,

One month since surgery of the spine is a very short period of time.  If I were you, I would tell the PT what you are feeling, and let them evaluate you for that pain/discomfort.  I would not, in my opinion, subject myself to low force high velocity manipulation techniques (chiropractic adjustments) for 2-3 months.  Your PT should be able to help evaluate how well you have healed, and when chiropractic adjustments could be started.  In the mean time, it is not uncommon to experience discomforts with exercise rehabilitation as performed by a physical therapist.

I hope that this answers your question. God Bless and speedy recover from your surgery.
