Question
Hi Dr. Newhart,

Over the past year I have developed pain in my upper back (soft tissue) followed by the development of a small hump on my lower cervical/upper thoracic vertebra and neck pain. I no longer have full mobility in my neck (i.e., if I want to look to the side, I have to turn my body). I participated in an obesity study (as a control) and had my bone density measured for five years in a row and was told that it was very good. So, I can't imagine that it would go from being very good to osteoporotic in the span of 2 years. Also, I am fairly physically active (mostly jogging). Even though I exercise, I am overweight (about 30 pounds). Do you have any ideas? The doctor I'm currently seeing seems to be more interested in getting patients through his office as quickly as possible and is not much help (I am planning to switch doctors).

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
Tamara

Answer
First, by all means, switch to a more caring doctor (whether your a switching MD's or DC).  There is no need to rush treatment, or you stand a chance of missing something.  Your new doctor may take new xrays, as a precaution...much can happen in 2 years.  And good for you on attacking your weight issue.  All of these steps are for your better overall health..it just may be a slow process to get it 100% :)
