Question
I have osteo arthritis and have had 4 joint replacements on my right side, all reasonably successful. I am anxious to avoid further surgery.  My left foot especially the big toe is causing problems.  Can this be helped by a chiropractor and how many treatments are reasonable?

Answer
Dear M. Tully,

Thank you for your question.  I am very sorry to hear that you have had to go through all of the surgeries, but it sounds like you are doing pretty well in spite of them.

It sounds like you most likely have some osteoarthritis of the metacarpal joint of your big toe.  This is a common joint to get it.  Chiropractic can be effective in helping this.  Treatment would likely include therapy modalities and passive joint movement.

I like to use acupuncture for conditions such as this.  I usually see very good results with reduction of pain and inflammation. Additionally, your chiropractor may find that you could benefit from shoe orthotics.  Insoles that aide in relieving pressure and stress on the joints of the foot.

Give your chiropractor a try and talk to him about your concerns.  One question I always ask my new patients is, "What do you want to get out of me?"  It may not be reasonable to eliminate all of your pain if your condition is severe, but instead to reduce your pain and make you comfortable.  It all just depends on the shape that your toe joint is in.  Visit with him about it and find out what he can do for you.

Take care and good luck.

God Bless,

Dr. Boss
