Question
Alright I was hoping to get some advice on if I should see a doctor. The problem started yesterday while I was doing a set of dips. On the final dip when I pushed up I had an extreme head rush with some pain around where the back of my head meets the neck. The head rush/pain sensation was gone the next morning(Today). It keeps on coming back whenever I start to work out. The pain is not serious but
I am worried about a possible injury that would be serious.

Answer
Dear Scott,

This appears to be an upper neck strain of the muscular system (probably the upper fibers of the trapezius).  The fact that you experienced this pain when performing dips may seem confusing, but often we utilize the traps for support when straining on exercises such as bicep curls or dips.

I would recommend that you take it easy for a few weeks.  That doesn't mean that you have to stop working out, but just reduce your weight, and make sure that your form is perfect in all exercises...give this issue some time to heal, and then have a gradual return back to full work outs.

If the pain becomes worse, or there is no appreciable change for the better, then I would schedule an appointment to have the area examined.

Respectfully,
