Sore upper back and trouble breathing

Question
Hi, last week on my way home from work (on the bus) I noticed that my upper back felt very tight and sore, I assumed it was because I had been at my computer all day and was a bit tense. However it became more painful as the night went on and got worse when I went to bed. I could only lie on my back as it was too painful on my side particularly when I exhaled. I have had this feeling now for 4 days - upper back is very sore, feels bruised, but no external sign of this. Also hurts in the middle of my chest at the front, just below my breasts. If I take shallow breaths I am ok, but sneezing, deep breaths, laughing, bending is all quite painful. Otherwise I do not feel ill, and have never has back pain before. Medical history: asthma when a child (nothing since), used to smoke but gave up 5 years ago, and am 29. Please can you advise what you think has happened and what treatment I should seek?

Answer
Hi Faye,

There are several things that be causing your back and chest pain. I would recommend that you see a Chiropractic doctor as soon as possible to determine what is causing your pain and recommend the appropriate treatment. Your symptoms could be caused by joint problems in your ribs and upper back or it could be something more serious. The Chiropractic doctor will treat you if it is related to the joints/muscles but if they suspect another cause they will refer you to your family doctor.

I hope this helps!

Dr. Liza
