Question
I have arthritis in my hands and lower back.
What I was wondering is it best to use heat or cold when my hands feel stiff.  I find heat feels better (especially in the winter) but I don't want to be causing more problems for in the future.  I am using one of those bean bags that you heat in the microwave.

Answer
Dear Debbie,  Either one is just fine.....  Heat really does fell better than cold especially in the winter....  However, cold packs can actually numb the area and therefore reduce the pain faster....

Here is a web site I use for information and safety....

www.orthop.washington.edu/arthritis/living/pain/05

Also taking an anti-inflamatory will help such as ibuprophen, advil, motrin etc...

Thank you,   karen
