fusion of the talus bone

Question
Due to arthritis I may have to undergo a fusion of the talus bone.  I realise the recovery rate is quite long - but once the bone is fused and I'm fully recovered, will I be able to participate in fast walking or jogging?

Answer
Ursula,

Sorry to take so long getting back to you. For some reason I have not been getting emails from all experts.com.

After a ankle joint fusion your ankle is not able to bend. Once the fusion has completely healed, usually you will see a physical therapist who will teach you how to walk with out a limp. Then you will be fitted with several special shoe modifications to make walking easier. An insert in the shoe called a SACH foot is sometimes useful to help you walk more normally. This heel cushion compresses as you put your weight on the foot and allows the foot to roll more normally as you step. Another useful modification of the shoe is a rocker sole. Unlike a typical flat shoe sole, the rocker sole is rounded, allowing your foot to roll as you move through a step.

After these two things you should be able to walk fairly normally and should be able to walk fast for exercise maybe even run.
