Question
In my teens a 75 pound box fell on the back of my right heel knocking out a bone in the back of my heel where your heel fits into your shoe.  My mother at the time didn't think it was all that important so I didn't get treated like I should have.  I was told just wait and it will go away.  Well, it has been a couple of decades and it has not gone away.  The pain is still incredible, it's as if some nerves were wrecked when it happened.  I have bone a cartilage that still sticks out and it looks like a blood vessel that covers that.  The symptoms I have are that I get excruciating pain in my heel whenever I walk and stand.  Do you feel that surgery would correct this?  Is there any way they can remove the cartilage and extra bone and see what is causing the nerve damage.  I cannot stand the pain any longer.  I have tried all kinds of shoes, etc, and none of that has ever worked.  I don't feel it will ever go away unless I do something about it.  Any advice you could give on what you might suggest, who I should see and if anyone else has had this experience I would appreciate it.  Thanks!

Answer
Hi Noriya,

I would suggest that if this pain is giving you trouble you describe, I would go and see an orthopedist and they can   determine whether surgery or a cortisone shot or some other option is available.

The doctor may or could refer you to someone who handles and specializes and foot care.

I would go and see a local orthopedist if available. Also investigate whether there is one that focuses on foot care, fracture etc...

As a physical therapist however I could not tell you at this point if surgery is recommended or not. Only an orthopedic doctor after review can give you more details.

Good Luck
