Question
Hi, my 18 year old daughter had a hip resurface operation 12 weeks ago and is experiencing a catching/ clicking, painful knee and opposite hip.She also had surgery 4 years ago on this knee, where they harvested cells from the knee to grow cartlidge for the painful hip. Is it normal for her to be experiencing so much pai in the knee and other hip?

Answer
Nicky

Your daughter may be experiencing pain for several reasons.

1. Her gait may be off.  If she is not walking correctly, she will experience pain in her knees and/or spine.  Have the doctor request a physical therapy consult to determine if she needs to build back muscle tissue.

2. One leg may be shorter than the other.  If she has a difference of even a quarter of an inch, she can experience residual pain.  She may need a lift in her shoe.

3. She may need to build back muscle.

Please have her re-evaluated by her doctor to determine the above questions.

Hope this helps and I wish your daughter the best.
