Answer
Judith,

This is a tough one.  Nerve pain consists of burning, tingling, or numbness to the toes.  It usually starts in the toes and travels up the foot.  When people complain of nerve pain I always ask if there are any back problems (i.e. herniated discs, bulging discs, arthritis)which can cause nerve pain to one or both lower limbs.  If this is negative, check on Vitamin deficiencies such as B12 which can cause nerve pain.  Systemic problems such as Thyroid disease, Rheumatoid arthritis, Lupus, Lyme Disease.  Medications can cause nerve pain as well.  I think I would start with seeing your primary care doctor and have him or her check you medications and labs.  If nothing comes up, a podiatrist can order a nerve conduction test to rule out nerve entrapments or radiculopathy.  Hope this helps and let me know if I can assist with anything else.

Sincerely,
Dr. Leslie Johnston, DPM
