Question
Hi, my daughter's friend (age 44) injured himself just today after diving into my swimming pool. The doctors are saying he has a break at c-6, since seeing the scan, that they want to do additional tests to be sure there are no more smaller fractures, and that they may be doing surgery in 2 to 3 days from now.  They also started him on steroids I believe.  After climbing out of the pool on his own volition, he then collapsed onto the deck, and then was unable to move his right arm or leg.  Very shortly after though, he regained sensation and was actually walking quite well, but didn't move his neck at all. He continues to have sensation in his limbs and if he were allowed, I believe would still be able to walk and move his arms.  I guess what I want to know is whether it is common or uncommon for a patient in his current condition to lose movement and or sensation at a later date, maybe after surgery or even before they perform the surgery.  Also, do the things they have said so far sound like something you would expect?  So far, it sounds like he's been very fortunate.  I would like to know what you think. Thanks much, Laurette

Answer
Hi Laurette,
Thanks so much for your question.

It's not unusual for someone to have an injury and lose sensation and motor skills for only a short time and then regain them again.

It's unusual to lose sensation and motor skills at a later date if that person has been treated for the injury. If the person suffers a spinal injury and does not seek medical treatment, then paralysis and loss of sensation is possible at almost any time.

I hope this helps.

Thanks again,
John McKinzie
